  • What are the main claims of the paper and how important are they?

This review paper claims that noninvasive breath analysis could be used in both environmental exposure assessment and clinical diagnosis and that may provide a promising alternative strategy to invasive and expensive investigations.

  • Are these claims novel? If not, please specify papers that weaken the claims to the originality of this one.

    Yes, the claims were novel.

  • Are the claims properly placed in the context of the previous literature?

To some extent. The authors reviewed only 28 papers in that field, and have missed many highly cited articles published before the current publication.

  • Do the results support the claims? If not, what other evidence is required?

The authors have to include other important papers and rewrite this paper.

  • If a protocol is provided, for example for a randomized controlled trial, are there any important deviations from it? If so, have the authors explained adequately why the deviations occurred?

    Not applicable

  • Is the methodology valid? Does the paper offer enough details of its methodology that its experiments or its analyses could be reproduced?

    NA

  • Would any other experiments or additional information improve the paper? How much better would the paper be if this extra work was done, and how difficult would such work be to do, or to provide?

It will be a nice piece of paper if the authors redo in-depth review.

  • Is this paper outstanding in its discipline? (For example, would you like to see this work presented in a seminar at your hospital or university? Do you feel these results need to be incorporated in your next general lecture on the subject?) If yes, what makes it outstanding? If not, why not?

This paper can be presented in some mini seminar, not as an exemplary lecture.

  • Other Comments:

It has been long since they submitted the paper. I may suggest them to rewrite the paper in the present context.

Yes- it would be a good seminar in a medical school.

  • Other Comments:

The author atates that exhaled breath analysis is becoming one of the desirable strategies for environmental exposure assessment.  it can also be used for clinical diagnosis because it is rapid, noninvasive and relatively inexpensive.  The author states that disadvantages of breath testing include the multitude of possible confounders and the lack of standardization of procedures for sampling, analysis and background correction.
